Amy Rose Spiegel
is an editor and writer living in New York City. Her books are Action: A Book About Sex and No One Does It Like You.
“Spiegel charms with frank, empowering advice on embracing one’s sexuality without apology…This should be required reading for anyone even considering having sex for the first time.”
—Publishers Weekly

“There’s a magnetic groove to her tone…Action is a sex book for 21st-century sexual politics, and the first written for a generation for whom gender and sexual fluidity are a matter of course. It feels like a wise and experienced companion, whose belief in the reader feels like a dare to trust that you could follow her confident and charming lead.”
―The Guardian

“Reading Amy Rose Spiegel is tantamount to listening to a new language—surprising to the ear, a shock to the senses, and utterly invigorating. She charters the brave new world of identity politics with trusting vigor—and that rarest of qualities, humor.”
―Hilton Als, staff writer for The New Yorker
“There are moments, hours, days when you’re just going through it. The sentences in this book are here to serve as bridges to a brighter state of mind. Eloquent language is paired with vibrant illustrations for a collection of charming and surprising affirmations that feel like they come not from a book, but from a true and wise friend who’s been where you’ve been.”—Workman Publishing
My work appears in the Rookie Yearbook anthologies, to which I also contributed edits, and the essay collection Rookie on Love.
I wrote and hosted a podcast series about Playboy’s rise and fall, as told by the women who made the brand and its founder so powerful and influential. The show, which was released by Sony/Somethin’ Else, was named one of Apple’s Best Podcasts of 2021 in the UK.
I sing and write lyrics alongside Brandon Louro, Bob Marshall, Peggy Wang, and Chalky White. The Guardian called our band “louche, yet invigorating,” which feels about right. My favorite song of ours is “Go For Broke.” You can find all our music, including our EP, Task, on Bandcamp.
I founded and ran Enormous Eye, a website that asked writers to record a full Saturday in granular, time-stamped detail. Here is my introductory entry. I’m not publishing new ones at the moment, but maybe someday, and there are plenty in the archive to love from Hanif Abdurraqib, Judnick Mayard, Mayukh Sen, Thora Siemsen, Jia Tolentino, and so many more. I recommend them all.
I love hosting events and parties, particularly with authors and musicians—previously, I’ve moderated discussions with Lucy Sante, Tavi Gevinson, Meg Wolitzer, Andrew WK, and other brilliant people. I’ve also organized reading series in bars (and in some of my apartments along the way). If you’d like me to come hang out in any of these capacities, drop me a line.
I’m an editor, writer, and the author of two books, Action: A Book About Sex and No One Does It Like You.

I’ve led editorial teams, managed special projects, and edited essays, reporting, and criticism for over a decade. Right now, I’m SELF’s health director. Previously, I was the editorial director of VICE. For more about my professional experience, here’s a CV.
